For three days, Cividale del Friuli turns its historic center over to the Palio di San Donato, a medieval festival built around the city's historic borghi. Processions, archery and crossbow competitions, musicians, drummers, market stalls and taverns fill the streets and squares, with many of the principal ceremonies centered on Piazza Duomo. The modern festival draws on Cividale's long association with its patron saint while allowing the medieval fabric of the city to become part of the event itself.
